Jackie is a qualified accountant and she joined The Orange Partnership just over seven years ago. Her earlier career was largely spent at Thames Water as a senior Finance Manager. Their loss was very much TOP’s gain. If the phrases “multi-tasker” and “safe pair of hands” apply to anyone it would be Jackie.
Here is an insight into Jackie’s take on her career as a woman in construction:
Q: What drew you to a career as an accountant in construction and major contracts?
There are never two jobs the same making my role as an accountant far more interesting.
Q: How do you find it as a woman working predominantly on major construction contracts and has it changed much over the last decade?
I find that sometimes women are perceived as not knowing much about construction but slowly we are beginning to be recognised as equally knowledgeable.
Q: Do you come across more women in senior positions today than when you started out?
Yes. I began life in the water industry where all senior positions were held by men. This has certainly changed over recent years and a good example is where Thames Water have recently recruited a female CEO.
Q: What advice would you give to young women embarking in a career as an accountant today?
Don’t be afraid to be yourself and pursue the goals you have set. Take advantage of any opportunities presented to you.
